There are three main types of asphalt roofing shingles available to Florida homeowners:
Strip (3-tab) Shingles - These are the most basic type of asphalt roofing shingles. Introduced in the early 1900s and becoming the go-to roofing material by 1939, strip shingles are thin, as they are made from a single layer of asphalt, and have a flat appearance that can resemble slate or subway tile. They’re lightweight and are the most affordable shingle out there. Strip shingles ruled the market well into the 1980s, before designer shingles appeared. Today, strip shingles can typically be seen on inexpensive tract homes or very old homes.
Architectural (Dimensional, Laminate) Shingles - These shingles are the most popular asphalt shingles today. Made up of two or more layers of asphalt, they provide a deeper, multidimensional appearance to the roof and are typically created to mimic the look of wood shake or natural slate. These shingles are thicker and provide more protection from damaging wind or hail.
Luxury Shingles - As the highest-quality laminated shingles available, luxury shingles provide a combination of aesthetic value and function that dimensional shingles can’t beat. Offering premium protection from weather and other potentially damaging elements, these shingles tend to be the most realistic representation of traditional shake and natural slate roofing.

Some asphalt shingle roofing is better suited to the weather extremes in the Sarasota and Bradenton area. Since we face the potential for high, damaging winds, lots of water and an abundance of sunshine, it’s important to note that asphalt shingle roofs are susceptible to these elements. The least wind-resistant asphalt shingle is the strip, or 3-tab, shingle. While this type of asphalt shingle works great for many homes, it is only rated to 60-70 mph winds. In a place like South Florida, where we sometimes get hurricanes, this could make the difference between whether or not your roof stands up to the next fierce storm.
Architectural, or dimensional, shingles are the most common shingles in Florida due to their durability. In fact, most homeowners associations (HOAs) require new homes to be built using these shingles for roofing. Architectural shingles cost a bit more initially than strip shingles, but their multi-layer glass fiber construction makes them much stronger than single-layer three-tab (strip) shingles. These shingles are typically able to withstand storms with wind uplift of 110 mph up to 130 mph, though some manufacturers have begun to produce them with extra reinforcement, increasing the shingle’s wind rating to around 150 mph and their lifespan to 50 years or more.
Luxury, or premium, shingles tend to be 20-30% thicker than architectural shingles, adding depth and richness to the aesthetic value of the home. While these shingles provide protection comparable to that of architectural shingles, luxury/premium shingles are sometimes referred to as “lifetime” shingles for their expected lifespan.
Asphalt shingle roofs are virtually maintenance-free (when properly installed), however, all homeowners know that unexpected home repairs pop up when we least expect them. Luckily, asphalt shingle roofing is easy to fix because it’s possible to simply remove the damaged shingle and replace it - no need to tear off the whole roof. While shingle replacement is rather simple, we highly advise you to let a professional roofer do the repair. If your roof shingles have suffered any damage, the experienced team at AKVM can help. We may be able to replace a few cracked asphalt shingles or refresh the underlayment to keep your asphalt shingle roof in good working order so it can continue to protect your home for years to come.
